The first time Cerriwen's story was written down was in the mid 1600's. A time when the witch hunts were building momentum. Neighbours and communities were reporting on each other, political and religious figures were vying for land and power. Mistrust was building. A scapegoat found....
I don't know what happens to cause the fear that fuels the flame, I'm sure we all experienced it to a degree in lockdown. Sometimes fear is diliberately caused to turn us against each other, the old 'divide and conquer' technique. After experiencing the Christchurch earthquake in 2011, seeing the absolute best in humanity, because people had already created support networks, changed my life. I saw my 'role' in lockdown, in the community I was living in, as trying to balance and calm that fear, so we didn't 'lose it' and turn on each other. If we can do this for ourselves and each other, I think we're on the right track.
I worry about the increase in the severity and number of storms, the changes we all need to make to stop humanity 'falling off the cliff'. I worry people wont wake up in time to change. All I can do is keep doing the work in front of me, keep creating the projects that feel right for me.
Reclaiming Cerridwen's story and Blodauwedd too, feels like part of this. I was gutted last week, I got turned down for funding to create a new show, but what's happening in its place really is bigger and better. I'll still reclaim Cerridwen's story, for her and the rest of us, but I've ended up reclaiming Blodauwedd too!!
Listening to the Owl call the other night, reminded me of that velvet black, star studded night feeling, like being wrapped in a warm cloak. She wasn't banished to the night, anyone whose walked silently in the woods at night knows this. Its a warm, heart warming glow, not a cold, empty terror. Love found a way to overcome duty, though trying to kill anyone in the process is obviuosly going too far! But this was the medieval day and as my friends Grandmaother used to say 'These are old stories, where happy endings were few and far between'.
